Several methods of anesthesia are available. The method of anesthesia that is chosen for or by a patient depends upon the nature of the surgical procedure and the patient’s level of apprehension. Dr. Johnson will go over these option with you during your consultation appointment.
GENERAL ANESTHESIA (IV SEDATION)
- Patient falls asleep and is completely unaware of the procedure being performed
- Johnson Oral Surgery Knoxville has been specifically equipped to provide this level of anesthesia.
- Dr. Johnson is Board Certified by the National Dental Board of Anesthesiology. Our office may also have a CRNA (Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist) administer anesthesia to allow for proper scheduling.
- Available for all types of oral surgery. A patient may choose general anesthesia for simple procedures depending on their level of anxiety. General anesthesia may be necessary if local anesthesia fails to anesthetize the surgical site which often occurs in the presence of infection
- Indicated for patients with medical conditions such as heart disease or lung disease
- For Full Arch Hybrid Dentures (procedure for replacing all teeth) we recommend general anesthesia

NITROUS OXIDE (LAUGHING GAS)
- Patient is conscious in a relaxed condition
- Nitrous oxide can help control both anxiety and pain
- Used for simple oral surgery procedures to more involved procedures such as removal of wisdom teeth and placement of dental implants
- Silhouette nitrous oxide mask for consistent administration and improved comfort
- ABLE TO DRIVE AFTER
LOCAL ANESTHETIC
- Patient is totally conscious / local numbing similar to that administered by your general dentist
- Administered in the area where the surgery is to be performed
- Simple oral surgery procedures such as minor soft tissue procedures and simple tooth extractions
